The following are concepts to consider when ministering to those with an Asian background.
Although Taoism and Confucianism, Shintoism, and Buddhism are considered religious systems for those with Asian ethnic ties, Taoism is an adaption from other systems of religion.
Confucianism is considered the core of the Chinese. It is set in the steep in ancestor worship and human-centered virtues such as the universal golden rule “do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you”.
Koreans tend to lean towards Buddhism.
Japanese embraces Shintoism and Buddhism with Buddhism as the lead faith mindset. Today many families have blended these two faiths.

Those of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese ethnicity might recognized these practices and ritual hidden under the identity of cultural practices and are done over and over thus layering the bondage and effect it has over individuals and the family’s lineage.
Confucianism –
Although this belief system doesn’t have One major god there are 4 that stands out.
- Guan Yin/Kwan Yin – Goddess of Mercy
- Jin Huan/Fu Ren – Lady of the Golden Flower
- Lord of Heaven or Jade Emperor – Considered head
- Tsao Chun – Kitchen or Household God
One of the major threads that runs throughout the generations is family respect for the elderly as filial piety. The overemphasis of “Honor your mother and father” is taken to the extreme. Disrespect in daily life rituals, family life rituals, and social rituals meant shame and dishonor. The individual can be ostracized from the family and the control and fear of this may prevent one to leave family traditions and beliefs. Some families will hold a “funeral” to disown and erase an individual from any rights to the family lineage. This is a major fear among many Asians.
The other overused belief is the universal golden rule to do to others as you would want to be done to you.
Both were cited when Jesus was question about the commandments and He spoke of two – Love to God, and Love for others. Love is the base of the Commandments. But in the Asian thought it is based on fear and on control. John 15:17, Rom 13:1, 1 Tim 2:1-4
Basically Asian belief systems uses man’s efforts to transcend, break the cycle of birth to death to rebirth, self-efforts to peace, harmony, prosperity and enlightenment. They are all “a” way but not “the” way. Only Jesus can claim this.
But one must keep in mind that to be free in Christ is to be free in many ways. The prayer will reveal and aid the reading of it help break the layers of bondage laid down out the element and contrary to the peace and harmony one seeks.
God’s promise in John 10:10 is abundant life to the full. 1 Tim 1:7, For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and a sound mind. 2 Cor. 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty or freedom. Luke 12 addresses how much God loves us and provides.
