So often we base what we believe on what we’ve heard others say without investigating for ourselves. For example, have you heard of familiar spirits? “Of course, you say! “These are spirits passed down the family line.” Well, actually that is not correct. The KJV version translates the Hebrew word yiddĕʿōnî as “familiar spirit.” This translation is found in Leviticus 19:31, Deuteronomy 18:10-12, and Isaiah 8:19. But later translations change the word.
I thank Charles Lum, our Hebrew teacher, for clarification. The word yiddĕʿōnî in Paleo Hebrew means, “Through the eyes one experiences his world and learns from it.” Combining the pictoral meaning of the 2-Letter root דע, it means ‘the door of the eye’. The key understanding of yiddĕʿōnî is that it has something to do with the ‘eye’, which is a gateway for sorcery. The ESV translates yiddĕʿōnî as necromancers (wizards or magicians). The word actually has nothing to do with familiar spirits.
The Lord is telling us that we are not to consult necromancers.
