The first time it happened to me was in October 1991. At the home of my friend, Brian, an American Baptist pastor, I was on the phone when surges of power began bombarding my head and radiating down my back. I said goodbye and was thrown to the floor by the power of the Holy Spirit, and I remained pinned to the floor for over an hour. I knew nothing about this but really liked it! For more than thirty years His power has fallen on me many times, making me unable to stand. This is not a new thing and is historically verified! I just read the History of Hawaii by a Presbyterian pastor, Titus Coen. In the middle 1800s, as a missionary to the Big Island he would sometimes speak four or five times a day. Often, the natives would be overcome by the power of the Holy Spirit as they listened, and would fall to the ground, crying out in repentance of their sins. Once a young man came into a meeting and tried to be antagonistic toward Titus but found himself pinned to the ground by God’s amazing power. He had to be carried out of the meeting by his friends, unable to walk. This happened in the Bible too: at Gethsemane, Jesus was approached by a cohort of Roman military forces – that’s over 400 soldiers. Jesus asked who they were looking for. “Jesus,” was their answer. He responded, “I am He,” and John 18:6 records what happened next as “they drew back and fell to the ground.” Why are we surprised by the Power of the Holy Spirit? American seminaries have scrubbed this part of church history out of the curriculum. The Lord is unmoved by their opinions…
